Roberta Flack, legendary singer of Killing Me Softly, has passed away at 88

Roberta Flack, the iconic singer known for her hit "Killing Me Softly," passed away at the age of 88.

R&B legend Roberta Flack, renowned for her hits, such as "The First Time I Saw Your Face" and "Killing Me Softly, "has died at the age of 88.

"We are sorrowful to share that the iconic Roberta Flack passed away this morning, February 24, 2025."

Said statement of her relatives : 

"She died peacefully, spending her last moments with her family. Roberta was also an educator, and he broke records and boundaries. "

In 2022, Flack revealed that she had been diagnosed with motor neuron disease, which prevented her from singing.

Born in North Carolina and raised in Arlington, Virginia, legendary Roberta Flack began her musical journey as a classically trained pianist. She earned a full scholarship to Howard University at just 15, showcasing her prodigious talent from an early age.


While her classical training led her to teaching, she immersed herself in jazz, soul, and R&B, accompanying opera singers by day and performing pop standards at night. This fusion of styles shaped her signature sound, blending classical influences with contemporary rhythms.


Flack's big break came when musician Les McCann discovered her performing in a jazz club. Her haunting rendition of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face was later featured in Clint Eastwood’s 1971 film Play Misty for Me, catapulting her to Grammy-winning success.


She continued to dominate the charts with timeless hits like Killing Me Softly With His Song and Feel Like Makin’ Love. Throughout the 1980s, she focused on touring and collaborated with music legends like Donny Hathaway and Miles Davis.


In 1991, Flack made a comeback with Set the Night to Music, a duet with Maxi Priest. She later paid tribute to The Beatles with her 2012 album Let It Be Roberta, cementing her status as a versatile and enduring music icon.

'True soul'

According to the Guardian, Flack once shared with a journalist: "I see myself as a soulful singer, as I strive to sing with all the emotion that I possess in my body and mind.

"A person with a genuine soul is someone who can take anyone's song, rise above all the imperfections and technique, and truly make you listen."

Once married to US jazz musician Stephen Novosel, the star devoted a lot of her time to the Roberta Flack School of Music in New York.

Reverend Jesse Jackson once described her as "socially relevant and politically unafraid".

In 2020, a year after having a stroke, Flack was awarded a lifetime achievement award from the Grammys.

"It's a tremendous and overwhelming honour," she said at the time.

"I've tried my entire career to tell stories through my music. This award is a validation to me that my peers heard my thoughts and took in what I have tried to give."

Flack's most famous song was introduced to a new generation of music fans when Lauryn Hill's hip-hop group The Fugees recorded a Grammy-winning cover of Killing Me Softly, which they would eventually perform on-stage alongside her.

It topped the charts around the world in 1996.
