R&B legend Roberta Flack, renowned for her hits, such as "The First Time I Saw Your Face" and "Killing Me Softly, "has died at the age of 88.
"We are sorrowful to share that the iconic Roberta Flack passed away this morning, February 24, 2025."
Said statement of her relatives :
"She died peacefully, spending her last moments with her family. Roberta was also an educator, and he broke records and boundaries. "
In 2022, Flack revealed that she had been diagnosed with motor neuron disease, which prevented her from singing.
Born in North Carolina and raised in Arlington, Virginia, legendary Roberta Flack began her musical journey as a classically trained pianist. She earned a full scholarship to Howard University at just 15, showcasing her prodigious talent from an early age.
While her classical training led her to teaching, she immersed herself in jazz, soul, and R&B, accompanying opera singers by day and performing pop standards at night. This fusion of styles shaped her signature sound, blending classical influences with contemporary rhythms.
Flack's big break came when musician Les McCann discovered her performing in a jazz club. Her haunting rendition of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face was later featured in Clint Eastwood’s 1971 film Play Misty for Me, catapulting her to Grammy-winning success.
She continued to dominate the charts with timeless hits like Killing Me Softly With His Song and Feel Like Makin’ Love. Throughout the 1980s, she focused on touring and collaborated with music legends like Donny Hathaway and Miles Davis.
In 1991, Flack made a comeback with Set the Night to Music, a duet with Maxi Priest. She later paid tribute to The Beatles with her 2012 album Let It Be Roberta, cementing her status as a versatile and enduring music icon.
